Volunteerism in Canada has been on a steady decline since 2018, with recent national data from Statistics Canada indicating a drop of more than 20 per cent in formal volunteer participation between 2018 and 2023. In a time when fewer individuals are able to give their time, it brings forward a meaningful question: what inspires those who continue to show up, to contribute, and to give without an expectation of anything in return?

For members of Kinark’s Family Advisory Committee (FAC), the answer lies in a sense of purpose.

Anagha, a FAC member, appreciates that her input is valued. “Volunteering for the Family Advisory Committee provides me with the opportunity to contribute my expertise, network with like-minded leaders, and make a tangible impact on causes I care about. It allows me to help shape decisions, influence organizational policy, and gain leadership experience while guiding strategic growth,” she explains. “The FAC provides a platform to raise awareness, act as a liaison between the public and leadership, and ensure diverse voices are heard. It is a rewarding way to support the organization’s goals and strategy, providing a sense of pride and purpose in contributing to something larger than oneself.”

For Barbara, her drive comes from a desire to make a difference for families. “I volunteer with the Family Advisory Committee at Kinark because I want to help families navigate the government system more easily. I believe that when parents face fewer barriers and less stress, they’re better able to focus on their children’s needs. I’m also committed to improving systems rather than simply pointing out their flaws. If my efforts make a meaningful difference for even one family, I’ll consider my contribution worthwhile.”

Both Anagha and Barbara have dedicated the past four years to volunteering, an especially significant commitment during a time when volunteer engagement across Canada is seeing such a decline.
